Meet the team | Tech | Core

By Victoria Cowan, 10 January 2022

We’d like to introduce you to our colleagues in the My Jewellery Tech Core team. Our tech teams are always finding innovative ways to use data and application development to help support the entire company in their daily tasks. The Core team focuses mainly on collecting and converting unedited details into usable information for the Insight team.

Colleague Joris Verzuu
Job title: BI specialist

How long have you been working at My Jewellery?
4 months.

What are some of your daily tasks?
At the moment there’s lots of different migration projects happening within My Jewellery. For instance, we’re currently making the switch from one ERP system to another, which is quite a task! We have to make sure not to lose any data, so we’re busy transporting data from the old to the new system. Besides that we’re also working on building a new data platform from the ground up. Our main goal is to rebuild our data to make it more user friendly and scalable. Some of the new tools we use include: Snowflake, Terraform, DBT, Power BI and Databricks.

What work are you most proud of?
I haven’t been working at My Jewellery all that long yet, but I am proud of the fact I get to contribute to the new data platform that’s currently in production.

What do you enjoy most about working in the tech team at My Jewellery?
There’s a really nice overall vibe within the team, everyone is open to helping each other where needed. Besides that we also use the scrum/agile principle which I’m a big fan of. Basically, it’s a principle whereby we come together every two weeks to determine what needs to be done in that time, this makes it easy to adjust the priority levels of certain tasks as we go along. It also means there’s more diversity in our tasks.

Colleague Ivo Pels
Job title: Technical Lead

How long have you been working at My Jewellery?
3 months.

What are some of your daily tasks?
As technical lead I make sure the TIM, our new data platform, is secure. Think: setting up standards and best practices, and developing generic components ( such as correct historical build up of data, implementation of AVG requirements etc.) Besides that I also help the team in making the right technical choices, so that we’re always working towards a scalable and future-proof solution.

What work are you most proud of?
In a short amount of time we’ve managed to make great strides in automatically generating codes, which means there’s far less need for manual work.

What do you enjoy most about working in the tech team at My Jewellery?
The speed and vigor of the team.

Colleague Joeri Christiaans
Job title: Data Engineer

How long have you been working at My Jewellery?
 Since August 2021.

What are some of your daily tasks?
My tasks mainly include unlocking data, and making it available for internal use. We do this by connecting with various sources (ERP, HR etc) and thereby maintaining the quality of our data. For instance, we’ll use Airflow to schedule all tasks, and use Bigquery to store all the data.

What work are you most proud of?
At the moment I’m still mainly focussing on learning the systems and immersing myself in the existing code. It’s amazing to see how efficiently everything has been designed, so that even new data sources are relatively easy to unlock.

What do you enjoy most about working in the tech team at My Jewellery?
The atmosphere is great. Despite having only been here for a short time, it feels like a real team already. There’s a real willingness to help, and the drive and determination to reach the targets is palpable.

 Colleague Martijn Hooijman
Job title: Data Engineer

How long have you been working at My Jewellery?
5 years.

What are some of your daily tasks?
My daily tasks include unlocking data from various data sources (such as the webshop, ERP, Google search console), cleaning up the date, and measuring the quality of our data. Our data-unlocking-tasks are planned in Airflow, so we are provided with fresh and clean data every day which is then stored in Bigquery. From there all the data can be used for various purposes, such as dashboards, analyses & machine learning models.

What work are you most proud of?
I’m not proud of any one thing specifically, but it does make me happy to see the data unlocking/cleaning/quality system we’ve developed over the last few months, mainly because it allows us to connect new data sources in no time.

What do you enjoy most about working in the tech team at My Jewellery?
Free work culture and fun colleagues.
