My Jewellery x Jukumu Letu

On the outskirts of Ngong Town, near Nairobi, you'll find Jukumu Letu: a safe and loving place where children from vulnerable families receive daily care, protection and education. Behind every child is a mother. A woman with dreams, strength, resilience and creativity. Through this passion project, the mothers of Jukumu Letu are given the opportunity to create handmade bracelets. They learn new skills, build confidence and build a sustainable income of their own. In doing so, they are empowered to support their families while shaping their own future.

What started as a personal passion project brought us all the way to Kenya. To truly understand the impact we wanted to make, we knew one thing for sure: we had to experience it ourselves. During our journey, we visited Jukumu Letu, a community centre near Nairobi where children from vulnerable families are welcomed every day in a safe and loving environment. A place filled with laughter, play and care. But also a place that reminded us that behind every child is a mother. A woman with her own story, strength and dreams. 

Meeting the Mothers

During our visit, we met the mothers behind the children of Jukumu Letu. Many of these women face challenging circumstances and often the responsibility of caring for their families on their own. Yet despite these challenges, what stood out most was their strengths and resilience. We shared special moments together that go beyond what words can express. We laughed, danced and learned from one another. 

Creating & learning together

Together with the mothers, we got to work on what this project is all about. We taught them how to create handmade bracelets and shared techniques, knowledge and skills. But what touched us most was not just the learning process.

It was the pride, focus, and joy of creating something entirely their own. 

A glimpse into their world

We were welcomed into their homes, an experience that deeply moved us. Many of the women live in informal settlements in Ngong and face daily challenges that are hard for many of us to imagine. Yet there was one thing that stayed with us most: their smiles. Smiles full of strength, warmth and incredible determination to build a better future for their children. This journey showed us that this project is about so much more than jewellery.

It's about connection, creating opportunities and empowering women so that they can build their own future.
