By Victoria Cowan, 18 November 2021
Friday 19th November marks International Men’s Day! That’s why we’d like to introduce you to a few of the lovely men who work at My Jewellery. Curious to know what they think of working at My Jewellery, read on quick to find out!

Colleague Thom Timmer
Position: Business Development Manager
How long have you been working at My Jewellery?
I started in July of this year, so it’s been 4 months.
Why did you choose to work at My Jewellery?
I was really motivated by the idea of working for a next generation brand like My Jewellery (with a really strong focus on Instagram and TikTok) and helping them become successful internationally. The positive vibes at My Jewellery were another deciding factor for me.
What’s it like being a man and working at My Jewellery?
I really enjoy working at a company with so many women. I’m kind of used to it, because I have a son and two daughters at home, so I guess I’m in the minority there too. I imagine working for My Jewellery as a woman is just as pleasant: there’s a really nice atmosphere here and Sharon has really inspired a ‘we’re in it together, girl power’ vibe. When you look at it, a lot of men work in the fashion industry, so I don’t think it matters much if you’re a man or a woman. Of course, I have noticed that I’m not quite as invested in the product as many of my female colleagues, but I hope I compensate for that in other areas. Like following the daily Instagram and TikTok trends.

I lead and support our (international) sales team, set up new business partnerships and have been working a lot on the international expansion of My Jewellery in the broadest sense of the word.
What does a typical day at My Jewellery look like for you?
Meetings with the sales team, other departments and our retail partners, to discuss orders/deliveries, results and future collections/plans. Besides that I have been very busy putting the right internal and external people in place to properly put My Jewellery on the map in the rest of Europe. In the future this will also mean quite a lot of foreign travel for me.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I really enjoy the fast and constant changes, and the opportunity to think big (the sky's the limit) But I also really enjoy the positive energy at My Jewellery and my inspiring colleagues. Oh...and I mustn’t forget the delicious fresh sandwiches in our canteen, yum!

How long have you been working at My Jewellery?
I started in July, so it’s been 4 months.
Why did you choose to work at My Jewellery?
Because it’s a great company with a real sense of entrepreneurship! My Jewellery has grand plans for expansion, and that really appeals to me!
What’s it like being a man and working at My Jewellery?
It took some getting used to, because in the past I’ve worked at companies with a lot of men. But, I soon realised that working with women is a lot nicer. Men prefer to have the last word and tend to show macho behaviour, but other than that there’s not much of a difference. In the end, it’s all about how you do your job and the passion you have for what you do!

I start with a standup meeting with our web builders, then determine our priorities, and I inform and involve colleagues about/in (new) projects. I also make future plans for our new e-commerce landscape, which we’re planning on making even better than it currently is. We want to become even more relevant to our target audience and expand into Europe.
What does a typical day at My Jewellery look like for you?
I like to be at the office early. Around 9.00 am I start the standup meeting with our web builders where we discuss the progress of various tasks and projects. I follow that up by setting up intentions and goals with the team so we all have a common goal to work towards. Besides that, I’ve also been working on various digital projects with colleagues from other departments.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
You can really make a difference here, and think about how to improve various parts, projects and processes! The funny thing is I don’t even see it as a job. Together we do a lot of cool things and we share a passion for the job. Everyone really goes for it!

Colleague Joren Wouters
Position: Data Analyst
How long have you been working at My Jewellery?
I started in September.
Why did you choose to work at My Jewellery?
Because it’s a fast growing company with a large data team that I can learn a lot from! I also responded to the idea that you can set up your own projects within the company and take them to the finish line. The fact the HQ is in Den Bosch where I live is a handy bonus.
What’s it like being a man and working at My Jewellery?
I love working at My Jewellery. Even though I’ve only just started, I feel really at home here. I think the biggest difference between the men and women, is that the men don’t go to the sample sale. Men have less affinity for the products. While women can get really excited by fashion and jewellery, us men couldn’t really care less.

As a data analyst I provide other departments with the right data insights so they can use those to base decisions on.This happens with a lot of different types of data and many different departments. For instance, we’ll help customer service by clarifying how many customer questions come in via which channels, and we’ll help Retail with setting up customer satisfaction surveys for the boutiques. All in all very varied, which makes it fun!
What does a typical day at My Jewellery look like for you?
My day starts with a team standup meeting, in which we discuss everyone’s to-dos for the day. After that I’ll make a plan for the day and send out some emails. I follow that up with making a dashboard for our customer service team, join the team in making a plan for the next two weeks and discuss the dashboard with customer service. After which it’s lunch time and table tennis time! In the afternoon I’ll fix any issues on the purchasing team’s dashboard, have meetings with the BI team and design the improved dashboard for purchasing.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love analysing data, gathering insights from that data and brainstorming the business. What I love about My Jewellery as a business is the openness within the company, you can literally walk into any department and have a chat with everyone.

How long have you been working at My Jewellery?
Since October 2021.
Why did you choose to work at My Jewellery?
I was looking for a job at which I could focus on personal development and where I’d be able to work with modern techniques. During my interviews with My Jewellery I got the sense that this was a great company where I’d also be able to work with my favourite tools.
What’s it like being a man and working at My Jewellery?
For me the most obvious difference compared to previous jobs is definitely the creative element at My Jewellery. As soon as you walk into the office building you can tell they put real thought into the design and interior, which is to be expected of a fashion company. The My Jewellery collection is mostly targeted at women, so I can imagine the women at the company feel more affinity for the business of the company than the average man.
Tell us about some of your daily tasks
My tasks mostly include improving the existing applications and developing new functionalities. Besides that I also have daily meetings with colleagues and sometimes I’ll help out with some issues.
What does a typical day at My Jewellery look like for you?
Usually I get to the office between 8.45 and 9.00 am, and I’ll grab a cup of coffee and prepare for the standup meeting at 9.00. After we finish the standup meeting, I have a few hours left to tick and test codes before our lunch break. The catering at My Jewellery is good, so I’ll usually order something (sometimes a little too much, haha). After our lunch break, I head outside for a little fresh air before getting back to work. After which the day really flies by!
What do you enjoy most about your work?
My Jewellery has been growing really quickly which brings with it some challenges in terms of software. Our group of developers is relatively small, so it requires a lot of independence and responsibility. This means it’s the ideal environment for me to improve in various areas. The atmosphere and colleagues are also very nice, which is an added bonus.

How long have you been working at My Jewellery?
I started in August 2021.
Why did you choose to work at My Jewellery?
In the end I really believed this was the right place for me to keep developing. There’s so much knowledge here which, combined with the latest techniques, really convinced me that I could grow here.
What’s it like being a man and working at My Jewellery?
Personally, I haven’t really noticed a majority of women in my direct environment. Men are very well represented in the BI team! Other than that there’s an obvious women’s touch around the office but at least that means the office isn’t boring! I think it’s probably a little different for a woman working at My Jewellery because they’re part of the target audience after all, and they probably have a little more use for the nice staff discount, but all in all I think your sex is largely irrelevant to the experience of working at My Jewellery. I firmly believe that the culture within the company is what men will notice most.

As a data engineer I focus on inputting data and making all of the data the company uses available. Besides that I’ve also been part of setting up the new data platform which we’re currently developing.
What does a typical day at My Jewellery look like for you?
Our day starts with a startup meeting, where we tell each other about what we’re working on and about possible roadblocks we’ve encountered. That way we can help each other where needed and stay up-to-date on what’s been going on. Besides that it’s also important to finish all of our team goals: sometimes we’ll do this on our own, but oftentimes we’ll work on it together. Of course we’ll also have some occasional small meetings to keep in touch with the rest of the team and other departments. Oh, and I can’t forget about the daily game of table tennis during our lunch break!
What do you enjoy most about your work?
There’s a really nice work environment. There’s a great atmosphere, everyone feels free to share. There’s also a focus on personal growth and learning, where it’s okay to make mistakes. Besides that you can tell there’s a real drive from everyone here to really go for it every day, which is really motivating.
Jewellery from the Equal collection by My Jewellery is designed for everyone! That means that these unisex jewellery items can be worn by both men and women. Which one are you going for?
