Colour types

Learning to choose the right colours can completely make a difference to your outfits. Has it happened that there’s a piece of clothing that always looks great on you regardless of the times you have worn it? Colours have to do a lot with it. When a colour suits you perfectly, it harmonises with the colour of your skin, but how come? What sort of magic is it with colours and skin? This all has to do with the different colour types out there. Colour types? We know, this might sound confusing at first, but basically, each one of us has a colour type and this depends on the colour of your skin, hair and eyes. Once you know what colour type you are, shopping & styling becomes more fun since you already know which colours will suit you best! Curious to know your colour type?

Determining your colour type

Now it’s time to find out which colour type you are, as finding your colour type makes it easier to determine which clothes you radiate in most. So your colour advice becomes clothing advice. No more shopping mishaps thanks to your seasonal type! The steps below will help you determine your colour type.

"Say yes to the perfect color"

Step 1: the undertone of your skin

First, it is important to determine whether you have a cool or warm undertone. Please note that your skin tone is not the undertone of your skin. The undertone of your skin is determined by the amount of melanin or pigment in your skin and does not change because of the sun or skin conditions. How do you recognise the undertone of your skin? There are some easy ways to find out. The veins on the inside of your wrist are important for this. You can hold a white piece of paper next to your face to see the colour contrasts. When doing this, make sure your skin is clean and you are not wearing makeup. Finally, how your skin reacts to the sun can be important.

Warm undertone

  • You will recognize more shades of yellow in your skin

  • The veins on your wrist have a green hue
  • Next to a white piece of paper, your face appears yellowish, peachy or oval
  • If you tan easily and rarely burn in the sun, you have more melanin in your skin and probably have a warm undertone
  • Gold jewellery looks best on you
  • A warm and golden look is characteristic of spring and autumn types

Cool undertone

  • You will recognize more shades of blue in your skin
  • The veins in your wrist have a blue and/or purple hue
  • Next to a white piece of paper, your face appears pinkish or bluish
  • If you burn easily and barely tan in the sun, you have less melanin in your skin and probably a cool undertone
  • Silver jewellery looks best on you
  • A cool and silver look is characteristic of summer and winter types

Neutral undertone

  • You will not recognize yellow or pink tones in your skin
  • The veins in your wrists have both green and blue tones
  • Next to a white piece of paper, your face can appear greyish/olive coloured
  • Next to a white piece of paper, your face may not appear yellowish, olive or pinkish at all
  • Gold and silver jewellery looks beautiful on you
  • A neutral undertone falls between warm and cool, you can experiment with different colours. Both warm and cool tones will look beautiful on you

Step 2: light or dark colour tone

By now you know whether you have a warm, cool or neutral undertone. Then you can determine whether you have a light or dark/deep colour tone. This test looks at your natural eye colour and hair colour.

Light colour tones

  • Light shades are characteristic of spring and summer types
  • Eye colour: icy blue, light blue, blue/grey, hazel brown, light brown, dark grey and black
  • Hair colour: light to dark blonde, ash brown, chestnut brown without a red glow, silver/grey, and blue/black. If you have a dark skin tone, your hair colour is dark brown, brown/black or black

Dark colour shades

  • Dark shades are typical for autumn and winter types
  • Eye colour: olive green, green, light to dark brown, hazel brown, warm blue (often with a yellow border around the pupil). If you have a dark skin tone, your eye colour is a warm shade of medium to dark brown
  • Hair colour: light to medium golden blonde, strawberry blonde, warm red, copper, light to dark caramel and deep chestnut brown. When you have a dark skin tone your hair color is deep gold/brown to brown/black with distinct warm undertones

Step 3: different colour types

Yes, we're almost ready! You now know what undertone and colour tones you have, now it's time to match a colour type to this. You may be a combination of several colour types, especially if you have a neutral undertone. Then use the colour types as a stepping stone and build your own composite colour palette.

Colour type: spring

Do you recognize yourself in the profile of a warm undertone and a light colour tone? Then you are a spring colour type. Colours that you should always have in your closet are those with a warm undertone. Think of warm, bright colours, these will look best on you.

  • Colours that will make you shine: sand shades, camel, peach, flamingo pink, moss green, light and navy blue. Light pastel shades also look great on you. Want to stand out a little more? Then go for bold bright colours like bright green, lime green, apple green, turquoise, sunshine yellow, gold, coral orange/red and raspberry red.
  • Colours better left out: dark and deep colours like dark blue, dark brown and black. These are too contrasty with your skin. Also, colours with a cool undertone such as white, grey and taupe are not for you.

Colour type: autumn

An autumn type is actually the darker version of a spring type. You are an autumn colour type if you have a warm undertone and dark colour tone. The colours that suit you best can be found in nature. For you as an autumn type the warm, soft autumn palette with earth tones, the colour of autumn leaves and the autumn sky is just right for you.

  • Colours that make you shine: beige, pastel peach, apricot, orange, orange-red, warm red, brown-red, shades of brown, terracotta, mahogany, coffee brown, chocolate brown, gold and bronze. Also, in our opinion, mustard yellow, bright yellow-green, moss green, khaki, olive green, emerald green, grape purple, petrol and deep blue definitely belong in your closet.
  • Colours you better leave out: bright colours, neon and colours with a blue, grey or pink undertone.

Colour type: summer

Do you have a cool undertone and a light colour tone? Then you are a summer type. Cool, smokey and soft shades should not be missing from your stash.

  • Colours that make you shine: white, sand, powder pink, old rose, cool taupe, soft greys, slate grey, cool grey, silver, grey-brown, light brown and seafoam green. Blue and purple shades are favorites in your wardrobe, baby blue, slate blue, cool blue, jean blue, blue gray, blue green, lavender and eggplant these suit you well and make your eyes pop. Pastel colours with blue undertones also look great on you.
  • Colours you should leave out: Deep and warm colours like beige, yellow, orange, copper, gold and moss green, will make you look pale.

Colour type: winter

If you have a cool undertone and a dark/deep colour tone you are a winter type. The contrast between your hair, skin and eyes is very big. That's why you should go for bright and cool colours.

  • Colours that make you shine: red, green and blue are your favourite colours. As with the summer type, all colours with a blue undertone suit you best, the only difference is that brighter colours suit you. Think royal blue and cobalt blue. But you also can't do without white, silver, bright cool red, cherry red, Fuschia, magenta, violet and emerald green.
  • Colours you better leave out: earth tones like brown, orange, peach, beige and powdery colours.

That’s it?

Yes, that’s it! How cool is it now that you know which colours will make you radiate? Have fun styling and coming up with new outfits. Shopping has never been easier!
